Non habitual residency, Portugal / All about benefits, taxes and conditions

What is NHR, or Non-Habitual Residency, in Portugal?

It was created in 2009, and in 2021 it also became available for non-Portuguese residents.

It has many benefits:

1. Tax benefits are granted to Non-Habitual Residents for a period of 10 years

2. No inheritance tax in Portugal for direct family members (this is not NHR specific but still makes the system attractive)

3. Taxation of only 10% in pensions obtained and paid abroad

4. Exemption from taxation in Portugal and from income from foreign sources if it is able to be taxed abroad

5. Taxation at a flat rate of 20% for income obtained from a Portuguese source
