One of the best things about Portugal during the winter season is that the country is not covered by the dark skies – this makes it stand apart from other countries in Europe.
Portugal experiences a Mediterranean climate which is why it generally has mild to warm winters. The average high rises up to 15°C during the daytime. Although, you must keep some warm clothes with you as the temperature drops to 8°C at night.
Tavira, Lisbon, Alentejo, Serra da Estrela, and Porto are some of the best places that you should head to if you are looking forward to the festivities and celebrations of Christmas.
Christmas (Natal) in Portugal is similar to the festival in other southern European countries. The main day is December 24th. People who moved to the big cities such as Lisbon and Porto from the countryside traditionally return to their home towns.
Traditional sweets usually eaten after the main meal include Bolo Rei (King Cake), a fruit cake, as well as the deep-fried and sugary sonhos and fatias douradas (Portuguese “French” Toast). Bolo Rainha (Queen Cake) has nuts rather than fruit.
These are just a few reasons why Portugal in December is magical.
